How to Make Homemade Oyster Stew-5 Minutes to Make!

I love oyster stew. It is a fast easy Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve tradition  I learned from my husband’s fam.  Thanks to my mom-in-law for the good recipe!  It really is so fast and easy, anyone can make it.  Here’s how to make homemade oyster stew.  This is a recipe for a big batch…and it is amazing!

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon of milk
  • 2 sticks of butter
  • 8-8 oz. cans of oysters
  • Salt, pepper and garlic to taste

Instructions

Open all oyster cans and drain 7 of them.  Dump all in big heavy bottom pan.  Dump in one gallon of milk.  Cut up butter into pieces and dump in milk.  Add some salt, pepper, and garlic.  The butter will float on the top in pats.  Turn heat on medium low.  Let it heat up slow and stir very gently.  Let it heat up without messing with it much, or the oysters will fall apart.  As the milk heats, the butter will melt.  Stir the top of the milk to melt the butter, without digging the spoon to the bottom. When it starts to look foamy stir to the bottom, and make sure it’s not sticking.  When it is hot, check and add season as desired.  That’s it.  Told ya it was as easy.  Now go forth and stew!  It is so nice to have an easy meal before the big day!

It takes 5 minutes to put together, then you can just stir and relax.  You are welcome to adjust the recipe as desired.  My mom-in-law says the rule is a can of oysters for each person being served plus one.  So if you are cooking for 4 people put in 5 cans.  And this recipe is for 4-6 people.  I put 2 cans per person since I’m feeding teens. It can be garnished with chives or parsley.  It can be served with regular or oyster crackers.

Enjoy and tell me what you think of making homemade oyster stew!
